Right to Voice: JHR UBC Inaugural Human Rights Magazine

Right to Voice: Submission Guidelines
JHR UBC Inaugural Human Rights Magazine

JHR UBC—the UBC Chapter of Journalists for Human Rights, an international media development organization—is seeking pitches for short articles, photo essays, and feature submissions for the upcoming issue of its magazine Right to Voice, themed “Olympics, Human Rights & the Media: Past and Present”

This will be the inaugural issue of Right to Voice, JHR UBC’s biannual human rights magazine, inspired by Speak, JHR’s annual national magazine, which was organized last year by JHR UBC. For a clearer idea of Speak and how we envision the JHR UBC magazine, please see last year’s issue on our website.

For this issue, to be launched in February 2010, we are focusing on human rights issues directly related to delivering the Olympic Games, whether here and now in Vancouver or in another time and place in
history. We are also seeking pieces to do with the role or impact of the media in such issues.

We are looking to address issues surrounding the subject using primarily originally reported literary journalism. Topics include anything relating to the point at which the Olympic Games (any Olympic Games, not necessarily Vancouver’s), human rights issues, and the media intersect, be they profiles of people and organizations involved in civil rights, investigations into rights violations at past Olympic Games, stories about Olympians or host cities themselves, case studies, success stories, or any number of topics we haven't yet thought of.

The stories we are seeking must be 400-600 words for short articles, usually suited to second-hand or mostly research-based reporting; and 1000–3500 words for features, which are the magazine’s showcase stories and to be based on original reporting.

Stories may be written by anyone—and here we caution it is difficult to report well on distant issues without having covered them in person.

We are also seeking ideas for visual pieces that will constitute our Front-of-Book section, such as graphs, maps, creative diagrams, conceptual images, etc.

As JHR is a bi-lingual organization, we will be accepting submissions in both English and French.

If you are interested in submitting a piece, please send us a pitch detailing your ideas and outlining the intended direction of your article. All final article drafts will be due in late January (with earlier drafts due, yes, earlier).

Please do not send fully written articles—PITCHES ONLY. Pitches must be approximately 300 words
for features, and 1-2 paragraphs for short articles, front-of-book pieces, or photo essays.

If you have a good idea but don’t know where to take it, let us know anyway, though full pitches will be prioritized.

All pitches are due by deadline Monday, December 7, 2009. Please send pitches to jhr.ubc.publications@gmail.com, with “JHR Magazine Pitch: Article Topic” as the subject.

Please contact us if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions. For more information about our organization, please visit www.jhrubc.ca and www.jhr.ca.

International Funding Opportunities

The week of November 15 is International Education Week in over 85 countries worldwide. We wanted to take this opportunity to remind Ryerson community members of the international funding opportunities available to your students.

International Conference & Research Support Fund (ICRSF): This program provides up to $1500 in matching funds for students to attend an conference, undertake research or participate in academic competition beyond Canadian borders. This is an important method for raising Ryerson's profile internationally - what better ambassadors for our institution than our best and brightest students. A key requirement of the program is that students must share their experience with their program area peers upon their return - engendering, it is hoped, increased interest in international opportunities among students across the university.

See http://www.ryerson.ca/ri/students/ryerson/fundingopps/ICRSF.html for more information.

Ryerson International Summer Experience Fund (RISEF): This program provides a $2000 award to students who undertake an internship, placement or volunteer posting that links one of the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Recipients of this award have spent a month or more in countries such as China, India, Cambodia, Guyana and Brazil undertaking a range of activities as broad as Ryerson's academic offerings. Journalism students have documented the condition of refugee camps; Early Childhood Education students have worked with disadvantaged children in orphanages; and Politics and Public Administration students have assisted local development agencies in cataloguing the needs of their constituents.

See http://www.ryerson.ca/ri/students/ryerson/fundingopps/RISEF.html for details.

In addition to the programs above, Ryerson International hopes to launch a new program targeting increased graduate student participation in collaborative research internationally - more information soon to come.

We are optimistic too that the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities will continue to support international education activity through their Ontario International Education Opportunity Scholarship (OIEOS) program, a program through which a total of 228 Ryerson students have received $2500 each - a total of $570,000.00.

Please see the program guidelines on the Ryerson International website www.ryerson.ca/ri for more details. If you have any further questions after viewing the guidelines, please contact the Ryerson International office.

National Geographic magazine - please check the requirements carefully

2010 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE PHOTOGRAPHY INTERNSHIPS

The National Geographic magazine will offer two photography internships during the summer or fall of 2010. The program is an opportunity for young photographers to experience first-hand the rigors of life in the professional world. It is also an opportunity for us at the Geographic to scrutinize the work of those in whom we may have further interest. We are proud that many of our regular “shooters” are former summer interns.

One internship is automatically offered to the winner of the College Photographer of the Year contest administered by the University of Missouri, Columbia. For information go to www.cpoy.org.

The other internship is awarded based on a portfolio. It is primarily for college students – undergraduate or graduate — but we will also consider someone not currently in school. The purpose of the internship is experience and encouragement to those who aspire to be a photojournalist. Interns must be at least 21 years of age and U.S. citizens, or have appropriate student work documents.

Both internships are for fourteen weeks at a salary of $480 a week. When on assignment away from the city, the Geographic pays all expenses. Transportation expenses to and from Washington at the start and conclusion of the internship are covered by the Society. The interns are responsible for their own housing.

To apply, send us a single package that includes a portfolio of recent work (no more than 30 images), a resume, and a letter of recommendation from a photography teacher or established photojournalist. We are interested in strong photojournalism, your ability to produce a visual narrative, and original story ideas. CDs or DVDs are the preferred method of submission but portfolios may also be in the form of slides, prints or clippings of any combination, in color and/or black and white. Digital images should be JPEGs, sized to approximately 1600 wide, 72 dpi.

We will accept portfolios in early January and all must be postmarked by January 30, 2010. Send to Susan Smith, Deputy Director of Photography, National Geographic Magazine, 1145 17th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20036. Please clearly label your envelope, “NGM Photography Internship,” and if you would like for us to return your portfolio, you must include a self-addressed stamped envelope.

We will notify all applicants by email in early March 2010.

Province posting for summer reporting positions

Are you looking for a great reporting experience in an amazing city?

The Province is looking for great students who can hit the ground running in our Vancouver newsroom next summer.

We want self-starters. We need reporters with a nose for hard news and the ability to write in a way that engages readers.

Those familiar with the Lower Mainland and issues that matter to B.C. readers will have an advantage.

Our summer reporters cover a range of assignments and are often counted on for page one stories. You should be prepared to work in print and online and cover everything from breaking news to features. We will expect you to generate story ideas as well as handle assignments from the desk.

We are looking for a positive attitude and for people who work well as part of a team.

You must have previous experience at a smaller weekly or daily newspaper to be considered for our summer reporting program. A valid driver’s licence is also mandatory. Copy editing and layout experience are assets.

Our summer positions last for 3 to 3.5 months and are paid at the first-year reporting rate. They are open to students and to recent graduates (within the last year or two.)

Please apply in writing by November 13th.

200 Granville Street

E-mail applications can be sent to lchu@theprovince.com.

Applicants chosen for an interview will be contacted directly.

Toronto Star internship application deadlines:

November 20, 2009 for the Summer 2010 radio room and reporting programs.

July 9, 2010 for year-long internship. Program starts Sept. 13, 2010

The Toronto Star offers young journalists three internship programs. Interns work with full-time staff in a challenging but supportive environment. All Star internships are paid, contract positions.

We cannot accommodate volunteers, short-term placements or co-op students.

A driver’s licence is required for reporting and photography positions (Radio Room excepted).

One-year internship

The Toronto Star is offering a one-year internship program for young journalists.

The program runs from September to September and is open to graduates under the age of 30 who have never held a full-time, permanent staff position at a Canadian daily newspaper.

Successful reporting candidates work in the city department. Copy editing interns are assigned to a variety of editing desks during the year. The program begins with orientation and there are seminar days. A demonstrated commitment to journalism is required, through a combination of formal journalism training and experience, or extensive experience. We will consider candidates with non-traditional qualifications and credentials. The application deadline is July 9, 2010. The program starts Sept. 13, 2010.

There are six reporting interns, two copy editing interns and a design intern in the 2009 - 2010 program.

The Radio Room

The Radio Room requires strong reporting and phone interview skills and the ability to work quickly and accurately.

Radio room reporters monitor emergency scanners, do police checks, monitor radio and television news and report stories that are often crime or trauma related. In addition to writing for the newspaper, radio room reporters file breaking news stories and updates to the website. Successful candidates also work shifts answering phones and providing support to the newsroom.

The radio room environment is often hectic, so successful candidates must be calm, well-organized, able to juggle several tasks at once; able to persuade sometimes reluctant officials to talk and prepared to interview victims of crimes or accidents, and family members of people killed or hurt in accidents or crimes.

The Radio Room is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by journalism students working eight-hour shifts. Several students are hired in late summer to work part-time during the university year; a second group of students is hired to work through the summer months. The radio room has proven to be excellent preparation for summer reporting programs at the Star and other dailies. Strong news reporting experience at university or community papers is required; reporting experience at a daily is a strong asset. The application deadline is November 20, 2009 for the Summer 2010 program.

Summer Program

This is a demanding program because summer reporters and photographers are hired on vacation replacement contracts - meaning that as full-time staff disappear on vacations, summer interns are expected to step up to the demands of replacing them.

The 10-week contracts for reporters are all general assignment positions in the city department and successful applicants could be writing features, covering crimes, courts, inquests, breaking news or health and education stories, in other words, anything that’s happening.

The positions are open to college and university level journalism students, (or college and university level journalists) or students who graduate in the year of the summer program they are applying for. Previous experience at a daily newspaper is usually required.

The program begins with a week-long orientation and monthly seminars and volunteer mentors offer additional support. The application deadline is November 20, 2009 for the Summer 2010 program.

Application deadlines:

November 20, 2009 for the Summer 2010 radio room and reporting programs.

July 9, 2010
for year-long internship. Program starts Sept. 13, 2010

AMÖI magazine - unpaid

Is your goal a fulfilling and exciting career in the publishing industry? Do you have the makings of a great editor, a leader in the publishing industry, or a skilled and valued member of the staff of a Canadian magazine?

There’s no better way to stake your claim to this kind of future than by an Internship at a lively magazine. We at AMÖI are pleased to make such opportunities available to a select two to three persons per year.

Our Internships run for four months. Our Interns are involved in the total process of putting out the magazine – from researching stories and fact checking, to selecting images, gathering material and working on subscription and newsstand campaigns. Interns also get involved in event planning and fund-raising.

Because we have a small staff, Interns at AMÖI are given considerable responsibility. They get to work directly with our Publisher, Chioma. Our Interns work three to four days a week. Ability to use a computer is essential.

If you are self-motivated and committed to making a career in publishing, we invite you to apply. Send us a cover letter telling us why you think you’d make good as an Intern at AMÖI, along with a resume and copies of published articles. Preference will be given to candidates who are enrolled in a publishing-related post-secondary course.

Interns must also have editing experience as they will also work on editing material for the magazine.

Internships are on a voluntary basis (sorry, no pay).

Send your application by email to:

“Nightwood is a fertile breeding ground for new female talent.” - Michele Landsberg, Toronto Star

Nightwood Theatre’s 11th annual emerging playwriting program, Write From the Hip is now accepting submissions from 18-29 year-old women looking for an opportunity to develop and write a play and advance their craft. Write from the Hip is a series of weekly workshops, mentoring and hands-on seminars in writing skills and professional play development specifically designed for emerging playwrights. Past mentors have included: D’bi Young, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Judith Thompson, Claudia Dey, Morwyn Brebner, Florence Gibson, Iris Turcott, Marjorie Chan and Lisa Codrington. This year each participant will complete a new short work of 20-25 minute inspired by a newspaper article. The workshop will include a pitch session with artistic director Kelly Thornton. Mentorship is a key component at Nightwood Theatre and one that provides a fundamental service to the community of young female artists pursuing careers in professional theatre. RUtv Meeting

Hi Journalism!

RUtv News launched with RUtv last year and did a full weekly newscast that broadcast around Ryerson and online for an entire season! We worked hard, put in long hours and got an invaluable amount of material for our demo tapes, resumes, and hands on-experience. We are proud to say we allowed people from all over RTA discover their writing talents, on-air presence and technical abilities.

And now, we are back for our second season!!!

With the executive team that is guaranteed to push for bigger and better things, RUtv News will do two newscasts a week and short news updates each day. All we need now is to build our crew! With over 20 active participants last season, we produced great results. Now, if we double that, we can beat our own records and everyone’s expectations.

We are having auditions this week and we want YOU to come out and show us if you can work with a creative and quick news team!

Auditions:

When: Wednesday, October 7th
Where: RCC 194 (Practicum Room)
Time: 3-8 pm. First come, first serve basis. A signup sheet with slots will be posted outside the door at 3 pm. Each interview will last 10 minutes.

We are looking for:

Editors
Writers
Reporters
Studio Crew
Graphic Designers
...and anyone else who think they can contribute with their skills!!

You are welcome to bring examples of your work (samples of writing, demo-reels), but it is not required! RUtv News will be your chance to generate that material and build your portfolio!

Remember: all equipment is provided! We work in HD format! We work together to tutor newcomers and allow them to improve!

We are a tight-knit crew and would love for open-minded, committed and passionate people to join us!

Thank you all,

Net News Daily

My name is Scott Campbell, and I’m the 14 year old business editor of a news website named Net News Daily.

Net News Daily receives up to 20,000 unique visitors per day, and is syndicated to various international media outlets, including the Chicago Sun-Times and Herald-Tribune. We’re also working on a syndication deal with a group of 50 UK newspapers. To date, we’ve been featured on BBC News Online, The Guardian, The Press Association and a number of other media outlets.

At this time, we have around 10 internationally based writers, ranging from age 10 to late 40s. However, to keep our content fresh, we’re looking for new contributors to write short articles (100-150 words) and opinion pieces. I feel that this opportunity would be beneficial for both us and your students, and I would be delighted if you could extend the invitation to them.

Any interested students (or staff members) should email students@netnewsdaily.com to express their interest.

I look forward to your response.
