The Province

The Province Internship

The Province is looking for multi-media journalists who can tell compelling stories for our audiences across all platforms.

We need people with the proven ability to chase breaking news. We want good writers who can find and tell great stories in print, in video and on the web.

We have summer reporting positions for students and recent graduates (within the last year or so). This isn’t an internship in the traditional sense. You will be expected to handle anything our regular reporters do. We will trust you with page one stories for the newspaper and the top stories on our digital platforms.

We want applicants with strong digital media skills, including the ability to gather and edit audio and video for the web. We need reporters who can reach out and engage audiences through Facebook and Twitter.

You need to be a self-starter with a positive attitude. You will be expected to multi-task and handle a variety of assignments in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines.

Previous experience working at a smaller daily or weekly newspaper is a requirement. So is a valid driver’s licence.

Let us know if you have a special interest or expertise in any particular subject area.

The Province newsroom provides interns with a fun, welcoming environment and a great summer experience in one of Canada's most beautiful cities.

Summer reporters are paid at our first-year reporter rate, which is $1,038 a week. The jobs last for 3.5 months and will start between mid-May and mid-June.

Applications must include a cover letter, resume, references and examples of your reporting. Because they are easier for us to handle, hard-copy applications are preferred. Complete applications should be mailed to:

Ros Guggi
Deputy Editor
The Province
Suite 1, 200 Granville St.,
Vancouver, B.C. V6C 3N3

You can also email your application to internship@theprovince.com. Your application package must include copies of your writing samples and not links to online articles.

We must receive your application by Friday, November 16, 2012.

Globe and Mail Summer Program for 2013

The Globe and Mail is looking to hire reporters, web editors, copy editors, a photographer and a page designer for the summer of 2013 in its Toronto office, as well as one reporter-editor for its Vancouver office. These are fully paid 12-week summer jobs and not internships. We hire students, freelance writers and editors, as well as experienced journalists from other organizations.

The Globe and Mail has won more national journalism awards than any of its Canadian competitors, has been honoured internationally for its world-class website, and has captured two Emmys for video projects, so we need the best journalists to replace our regular staff when they go on vacation.

Even though these jobs are just for the summer, the program is a great way to get your foot in the door at The Globe and Mail. We have hired many future senior editors, reporters, online editors, foreign correspondents and columnists through our summer program.

We are looking for people who are ready to work at Canada’s national newspaper and who have previous journalism experience _ whether at a school paper, a Canadian daily or an online organization. We want people who have a true passion for journalism, great drive combined with common sense, and an ability to step into and be a full part of Canada’s best news organization. A university/college degree or advanced studies in other areas is an asset. FYI: If you have no journalism experience through a school, freelance, regular blog or other organization, you probably won’t make it to the interview stage.

We accept expressions of interest by e-mail only, per the instructions below. No phone calls, please!

The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. ET, Monday, Nov. 5, 2012. Interviews will be conducted in the weeks immediately following.

E-mail the following to summerjobs2013@globeandmail.com please: 1. Résumé, including relevant experience, as an attachment. 2. A 100-word explanation of what you would bring to The Globe or globeandmail.com as an editor or reporter in print or digital. 3. Three examples of your work through a link. In the subject line of your e-mail application, please indicate your school or city and whether you are seeking editing, web, reporting, photography or newspaper design work. The subject line should therefore look like this: Ryerson-photographer or Carleton-editor or Vancouver-reporter etc.

The large volume of applicants we receive every year means we cannot respond to everyone who applies. But you will hear from us shortly after the deadline if you are chosen for an interview. If you are, please spend a little time with The Globe and Mail and globeandmail.com before we see you.

Good luck to everyone.

Chart Attack - honorarium

Calling all music nerds: If you’ve never heard of Chart Attack, it’s one of Canada’s oldest and most respected indie and alternative music websites. Every day, our team shares a handpicked selection of our favourite new bands, tracks, and music videos, along with weekly text and video features. We like making jokes, trying new things, and learning about awesome music, new and old. Does that sound like fun to you? It does? Cool!

We’re looking for talented, ambitious writers to help us with daily posts and pitch and create one-off features or weekly columns. We’re open to all sorts of ideas.

Our ideal candidates are:
  • Extremely knowledgeable about indie and alternative music
  • Creative, intelligent, funny, critical, opinionated
  • Extremely reliable
These are part-time internships requiring 5-10 hours per week, and you can work whenever and wherever you are, as long as all deadlines are met. Writers will be compensated with a $100 per month honorarium, and we can get you access to concerts around town, free CD's, and, of course, it’s an outstanding opportunity to network.

To apply, just send a short blurb about who you are, what bands you’ve been listening to lately, and what your strengths are to hello@chartattack.com. If you have any pitch ideas for columns or features, we’d love to hear them too. Must include relevant writing samples, and a resume would be helpful.

We will be accepting applications until Nov. 9. Only successful candidates will be contacted.

Good luck,
Daniel Busheikin
Editor-in-Chief, Chart Attack

Job title: Editorial intern

Rate of pay: $2,000 over four months

Expected hours per week: Minimum 12 hours

Duties of the job: Writing and research support for a small, socially progressive national business magazine with a Canadian circulation of 100,000 focused on sustainability issues. We are based in Toronto. We are flexible on hours of work, as long as they land within regular business hours. We are located at the corner of Richmond St. and Spadina Ave.

Skills and experience expected of a successful candidate: We are seeking a senior journalism student or recent graduate with an interest in both business and environmental/social justice issues. Obviously, strong writing and interviewing skills are a must. It would be beneficial to have experience with social media and, from a research perspective, a knack for digging up information.

A key part of the position will be completion of a 1,500-word feature assignment that, when published, would earn the writer $1,500. Another $500 is available for smaller writing assignments. This internship offers an opportunity to collect bylines, learn the inner workings of an upstart magazine, network with a who’s who in the world of business and sustainability, and help a national publication promote environmental and social responsibility in the corporate world. Some of our past interns have gone on to become freelancers for the magazine and, when openings are available, permanent staff members.

Contact information: Tyler Hamilton, editor-in-chief, tyler@corporateknights.com. For more information about the magazine visit www.corporateknights.com.

Deadline for applications: The position would start in early January and run until the end of April. Please submit applications via e-mail by end of day November 15. Our expectation is to begin interviewing candidates for the internship in late November, early December.
