Applications for our next internship cycle (issue 13) are due by midnight on April 1st, 2011. Successful applicants will be contacted to arrange a time for their interview within two weeks.
At this time all internship positions are volunteer and only available in Toronto. We are a small, homegrown publication. So far no one (not even the editor) gets paid. However, we are working hard to change this sad, sad fact, as we believe that all contributors deserve to get paid.
WHAT A WORNETTE DOES
WORN wants to develop and accommodate our interns’ personal goals. We provide opportunities in editorial, production, event planning, circulation, sales, web development, layout design, product design, promotions, and styling — if you’re interested in it, you can do it at WORN.
WORN interns are responsible for a project or two that they see through during the course of their internship. You’ll develop a real sense of leadership while observing first-hand how many departments come together to produce WORN. In the past our interns have created a newsletter, organized smaller photo shoots, wrote supplementary text for the magazine, supervised art direction for our sewing zine, ran the shows and sales department, created product displays, and formed a database of readers who want to model for WORN.
DAY TO DAY TASKS INCLUDE
- write and/or photograph for wornjournal.com
- help proof and fact check text
- assist with photo shoots, including sourcing garments, casting, and styling
- compile and present fashion and publishing research
- attend and participate in mandatory monthly staff meetings on the 15th of the month
- manage and increase visibility online, including but not limited to marketplace sites, social networking sites, and blogs
- help to promote, prepare for, and work at trade shows and events
- daily ins-and-outs of a magazine (packing and shipping orders)
- work on fundraising merchandise (pins, tee-shirts, supplementary zines)
- participate in staff-wide activities like promoting and working at events
- reporting on and attending lectures, exhibits, and events relating to fashion in Toronto
- potential to write for print issue, based on pitches
WHEN TO BECOME A WORNETTE
All internships are 10 hours a week, and require a minimum of one five-hour afternoon shift per week in the Parkdale, Toronto office. As well, attendance to the staff meeting every 15th of the month is mandatory. Please do not apply if you don’t think these hours will work for you.

HOW TO APPLY TO BE A WORNETTE
Send a copy of your resume, a sample of your work, and the answers to the following questions to internships @ wornjournal.com. As a whole, what we’re really looking for is a love of WORN and a firm understanding of what WORN represents.
Sample options are:
1) writing in the style of WORN (please no academic essays)
2) graphic design
3) 3-4 fashion images you created (styled and/or photographed)
4) a detailed project description related to fashion publishing or promotion
*Note that reading a minimum of two full issues of WORN is absolutely required before submitting this application. Reading the website is not sufficient.
1) What’s your favourite article or photo shoot from any issue (not the website) of WORN? Why?
2) Pitch us a personality for a “WORN Crush.” Who do you think would be a worthy candidate? Why? Give us three questions you would ask them.
3) Who do you think reads WORN? Give us a brief description (no more than 50 words) of the average WORN reader.
4) What publication (besides WORN of course) can you not live without? What’s so great about it?
5) What department of WORN entices you most? Styling, writing, graphic design, promotion, distribution or other? Why?
6) Why do you want to be a WORN intern? What do you hope to get out of the experience?
7) Provide links to any public social networking sites or blogs on which you are active (excluding facebook).
