National Magazine Awards Foundation - paid

The National Magazine Awards Foundation offers four (4) paid internships to journalism students and students pursuing a career in Canadian magazine publishing. The internships are divided by region and the National Magazine Awards requires: one (1) intern from Ontario, one (1) from Quebec, one (1) from Eastern Canada and one (1) from Western Canada. The internships will last from December 13, 2010 until the awards gala on June 10, 2011. See below for more details.

Time: December 13, 2010 – June 10, 2011

Hours: 5-8 hours per week on average, not to exceed 15 hours in any week. Hours are mostly flexible and office work for the Ontarian intern is generally not required except during peak times. Peak times are Jan 10-21, mid-March, late April, and the 3 weeks leading up to the awards gala.

Payment:

· The Eastern and Western interns will work remotely and receive a striped of $500 each. See job description below.

· The Quebec intern will work remotely and, in addition to the job description below, may also be required to secure French and bilingual judges and will receive a stipend of $750. The Quebec intern must be perfectly bilingual.

· The Ontarian intern will work both remotely and in the office during peak times. In addition to the job description below, other tasks will include verifying and organizing submissions, creating a nominees exhibition for the gala and other tasks that arise. The Ontarian intern will receive a stipend of $1,250.


Rewards: Cash stipend plus two complimentary tickets to the 34th annual National Magazine Awards gala on June 10, 2011.

Description: A great opportunity to work behind the scenes of the Canadian magazine industry through one of its most important and celebrated institutions – the National Magazine Awards. Working with the NMAF Communications Manager, the tasks of all interns will include liaising with magazines and individual applicants to the NMAs, fact checking and copy editing NMA promotional material, compiling statistics and industry research as needed, assisting with the development of creative ideas for the NMA gala, assisting with media outreach and advertising, and others tasks that arise.


Requirements: Applicants must be well-motivated, independent workers with a healthy respect for deadlines and a passion for magazines. You must be available at our peak times listed above.

Preference will be given to applicants in the magazine stream of journalism and/or those who demonstrate a strong interest in exploring the magazine industry professionally. Knowledge of French is an asset.
