The Robert McLaughlin Gallery (RMG) has created a one year contract employment opportunity within its Communications Department. The Communications and Events Co-ordinator will provide communication support for exhibitions, events, and special projects, as well as support for day-to-day gallery operations. The successful candidate will work closely with the Gallery staff on projects related to programming, education, liaising with the public, outreach initiatives, and fundraising. Some physical work will also be required while working in the Gallery.
Responsibilities:
• In consultation with the Chief Executive Director and staff the Communications and Events Co-ordinator will co-ordinate the artistic design, editing and production of promotional materials for the Gallery
• Research associated costs and prepare detailed estimates and budgets for all communication and promotional materials for RMG
• Coordinate and implement advertising and promotional strategies for Gallery fundraisers and membership
Tasks:
• Provide support for the development of web-based programming initiatives
• Develop and layout new content for the website
• Manage and maintain the Gallery’s social networking pages
• Develop new social networking strategies
• Assist with fundraising and development, as required, as it relates to communications
• Prepare and distribute media releases for exhibitions, fundraisers and membership events
• Establish and maintain positive relationships with local regional, national and international media
• Maintain media contact and arranges press conferences
• Monitor the media for articles and publicity related to RMG; maintains clipping books
• Produce and maintain an inventory of visual images to promote the Gallery, its exhibitions, and programs
Hours will typically be 3 days a week Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m. Occasional evenings and weekends as required.
Requirements:
Required qualifications include:
• Knowledge and experience using computer applications / programming languages including Adobe Creative Suite
• Knowledge and experience using social networking tools such as twitter and facebook
• A strong knowledge of contemporary art
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
• Educational background in Fine Arts, Art History, Arts Administration, Museum Studies or Design
• Skills and experience with new media as well as design for both print and web
• Experience writing press releases is an asset
• Bilingualism in both official languages is definitely an asset, but not a required component of the position
