Guelph Mercury



The Guelph Mercury is seeking applications for a summer reporter-photographer intern. Applications will be received until March 3, 2014. This is a paid, four-month internship that will run from the start of May to the end of August. There is some flexibility on the start and close dates for the contract.

FUNCTIONS:
·    Cover issues, events and people as assigned.
·    Write news and feature stories in a variety of lengths and styles.
·         Generate story ideas for news, features and long-term projects.
·         File on deadline daily.
·         Some photography. Some video work.
·         Multimedia work, including video editing.
·         Social media work and monitoring,
·    Other duties as assigned.
·    Weekend and evening work.

QUALIFICATIONS:
·    Newspaper or writing experience; good interviewing skills
·    Strong writing and communication skills.
·    Proven ability to work under pressure of deadlines.
·    A self-starter with good news and feature story ideas.
·    Investigative and freedom of information reporting skills as well as a working knowledge of computer assisted reporting are considered assets.
·    Ability to use digital cameras.
·    Excellent time management skills.
·    Must have a current Ontario driver’s licence and a dependable vehicle.

HOURS OF WORK:
·    37.5 hours a week and some Saturdays, as assigned. Must be prepared to work a flexible schedule.
