Yahoo Canada Editorial Internship

YAHOO CANADA EDITORIAL INTERNSHIP

The Yahoo Canada Newsroom Internship Program offers aspiring journalists the opportunity to develop skills in a digital-first working environment. Successful applicants will work with full-time staff in a fun, fast-paced and challenging newsroom environment where they will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of tasks across a range of categories - from news and sports to entertainment and lifestyle - that make up the Yahoo! Canada Media Network. We merge traditional media with the latest new media trends. Successful candidates will participate in a wide variety of tasks from story packing to curating comments from social media platforms to create new types of stories, using new storytelling tools such Storify and ScribbleLive, and tapping into the range of assets Yahoo owns including  umblr and Flickr.

The program is our commitment to helping develop the digital media IQ of the next crop of Canadian journalists. We encourage students and recent graduates of schools of journalism or similar programs to apply for these opportunities.


Summer Program
This is a full-time, short-term paid contract position in our Toronto office. Successful candidates are expected to quickly learn our publishing tools and editorial practices as the role covers vacation replacement of our employees.

During the 15-week contract, participants will rotate through our various editorial units in order to gain insight on the variety of tasks that are completed every day by the editors at Yahoo Canada.

Skills you will learn include Web publishing, content curation, story packaging and programming, Web analytics, teamwork, and collaboration.

Candidates will have the opportunity to move between units in our editorial department to learn the spectrum of responsibilities and tasks that make up the daily production of the Yahoo Canada experience.

Job Responsibilities


Join the Yahoo Canada team and work on best-in-class products that offer compelling content and user experiences. We seek students or recent graduates to join our team in paid summer contract positions. Successful candidates will work on sites across our network including Home Page, Sports, News, Entertainment, Business and Lifestyle in our downtown Toronto office.

The ideal candidates will understand the Yahoo audience and its interests. She or he will demonstrate the ability to select and package the latest, most engaging content, is a proactive thinker with excellent news judgment and editorial instincts to create the best user experience. The winning candidate is experienced with social media. She or he will also be at ease with a variety of Web technologies and demonstrate an ability to learn new systems quickly.

A sample of the tasks you might be asked to work on:

·         Package and program fresh, relevant, engaging content: monitoring provider and original contributor content; writing tight, engaging headlines; selecting and editing appropriate images
  • Source and select content assets to enhance articles pages and section fronts to create the most engaging user experience
  • Mobilize quickly to post breaking news first
  • Build and categorize video packages, photo slideshows, and topic pages
  • Execute on social media and off-network distribution initiatives
  • Monitor trending topics, Yahoo providers and Web at large to generate timely story ideas and editorial decision-making
·         Making great choices crafting clever headlines and tease copy, choosing and cropping appropriate images
·         Pitching content packages to other vertical teams and pro-actively packaging material from the Yahoo! network
  • Ensuring accuracy of content and work, consistency in style and voice, quality of user experience by double-checking links, facts
  • Demonstrate knowledge of innovative websites in the market and working knowledge of competitors

Job Qualifications
  • Excellent communicator both written and verbal
  • Proactive thinker not afraid to take initiative and effectively prioritize efforts
  • Proven ability to write and edit copy quickly and accurately; solid knowledge of the principles of writing for the Web, and editing experience in a dynamic online editorial environment
  • Knowledge of SEO and social media best practices is an asset
  • Experience with emerging platforms for reporting and storytelling on the Web
  • Solid foundation in one or more of the following categories: current events, sports, entertainment, business, lifestyle
  • Collaborative and communicative work ethic
  • Ability to work independently under tight deadlines
  • Strong organizational/record-keeping skills
·         Strong familiarity with Photoshop
  • Basic HTML skills; an aptitude at learning new online tools
  • Excellent Web writing style
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work a flexible work week – with some evening and occasional weekend/holiday work involved
·         A thorough understanding of editorial best practices and priorities, and an authoritative grasp of CP Style and libel law

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Bilingualism in French (written & verbal) is an asset
