Volunteer Position


Visual Arts Reporter - Yorkville News
General

Goals: Make art accessible to the person-on-the-street and encourage a vibrant visual arts community in Yorkville.

To consolidate information about visual arts events in one convenient site.

Location: Live or work in Yorkville or be willing to make periodic trips to Yorkville

Availability: Be available to visit Yorkville galleries in advance of new exhibitions and to attend opening receptions each month.

Pay: Zero (Volunteer position). Transportation and meal costs will be paid directly to the volunteer.

Rewards: “Priceless”

Credits: You will have a byline or article credit on every publication.

Ownership: You retain all rights to any articles you author.

Time Commitment: 4 to 8 hours per month but is up to the individual

Term: 6 months minimum

Connections: Have good relationships in place with the visual arts community or be willing to build them.
Artistic Background

• Some formal art training is preferred.

• Arts graduates or students are welcome.

• Demonstrates enthusiasm for Art.

• Appreciates a wide range of artistic styles.
Suitable for: (Any of the following)

* A visual arts student who wishes to build a solid base of contacts and experience in the arts.

* A journalism student who wishes to specialize in writing on the arts.

* A Public Relations specialist who wishes to focus on the arts.

* A retired person with a strong arts background who wishes to maintain a presence in the arts and use his/her experience in a practical way.
Skill Set

• Good computer literacy and very comfortable with email communication.

• Good written communication skills and a strong interest in expressing yourself in writing in everyday language with minimal “artspeak”.

• Good interpersonal skills.

• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Technology Requirements (A “tech” background is not necessary for this role.)

• Have a PC or Mac with an up-to-date antivirus program.

• Have MS Word or equivalent software.

• Cell phone

Note: this position is part of a two person team. You will be matched with an Arts web programmer from OCAD who will take care of the transferring the updates to the web.
