Time Colonist - paid

Job Posting

Times Colonist

The Times Colonist, a daily newspaper in Victoria, B.C., is seeking to hire three intern reporters to work in the newsroom during summer 2013. The internships will run approximately from late May to early September. Two interns will work in the news section, while one will work in life and arts.

The successful candidates must be enthusiastic, hardworking, and able to take direction as well as initiate compelling story ideas. The ability to work under the pressure of deadlines for both the web and the paper is essential. Familiarity with web posting is an asset. Interns are expected to cover daily news as well as write features, and be able to handle assignments in other areas such as business and sports. As such, these positions would suit senior students with previous newspaper experience.

As British Columbia’s capital city, Victoria offers journalists a rich source of news, feature and issue stories. The Times Colonist’s monitor section challenges writers with a forum for magazine-style features. Shirts will include morning, afternoon and weekend work. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and be familiar with CP style.

Students who apply must send a resume, up to five clippings and a cover letter explaining why they want to work at the Times Colonist. Please indicate a preference for the news positions of the life/arts position. Applicants for life/arts must demonstrate they have previous experience reviewing the arts.

The deadline for admissions is Dec. 3, 2012. Hard copy or electronic applications are acceptable; where possible, electronic submissions should be compiled into one PDF.
