POSITION: Editorial Internship, WOMAN.ca (Transcontinental Media)
HOURS/WEEK: 20-25, flexible
COMPENSATION: unpaid, with a $100 monthly honorarium, and potential for future employment
WORK FROM: home, or our central office in Yorkville, downtown Toronto
WHO WE ARE:
We are an online women's magazine that covers a variety of topics, including lifestyle, careers, arts and culture, entertainment, fashion, beauty, dating, and parenting. We work together with our mother publishing company, Transcontinental Media, to gain access to some of the biggest and most exciting events in the city, providing Canadian women with relevant, interesting content every day.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
We are looking for an educated and hard-working intern with a keen eye for grammar and spelling, thorough knowledge of CP Style, and a Journalism or Communications background. Ideal for students or recent grads looking to gain experience, make connections, and integrate themselves into the industry. We are working under a broader, and very well-known, media umbrella, therefore there is potential to move upwards within the company, or to branch out and work with one of our various sister publications. Historically, internships are draining, menial and not very rewarding. Here, you will be dually recognized for your hard work, included and consulted as a member of the team, and fairly considered for future, permanent employment. We value those who take initiative, are not afraid to offer input in story meetings, or to use their proverbial "red pen" strictly and swiftly when editing. Also, we like to challenge our interns, asking them to step out of their comfort zone and into "the real world" by venturing out on occasion to cover events, movie premiers, art openings and fashion shows.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Your job as editorial intern will be to assist the main editor in all of her editorial tasks. This includes going through all content with a fine-tooth comb, surveying for errors, spelling slips and formatting issues before they are published. You will communicate with the editor, as well as the writers, on a daily basis to make sure that monthly quotas are met, and content is sound. You will access all content using a CMS (you will be shown how to do this) and will field, to the best of your abilities, all questions from contributors as they come in. You will have to the option to accompany the editor and a few featured writers to press conferences, galas, fashion events and film premiers. There will also be the opportunity to publish your own writing, which will then be used on our key site, and syndicated to a number of other strong media hubs. You may chose to work in our downtown office, or from home. If you do choose to work from home you should be able to come into the office occasionally to join our strategy meetings.
MUST HAVE:
- exceptional spelling and grammar skills
- communications or journalism background; educational, volunteering or professional
- working lap-top, access to the internet
- knowledge of CP Style
- and interest in women's lifestyle publishing
- an open mind and a sense of humour
