Foreign Correspondent Training Course
Prague, January 3 - 11, 2010
This winter Transitions (TOL) will be holding its regular Foreign Correspondent Training Course for young journalists and journalism students. The nine-day course offers participants the opportunity to learn the skills of international reporting directly from experienced foreign correspondents.
Who are the trainers?
Our trainers are all experienced foreign correspondents. Here’s the provisional lineup:
· Rob Cameron, the BBC's correspondent in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
· Dean Cox, a photojournalist covering international affairs, politics, social issues, natural disasters and travel.
· Michael Jordan, the Bratislava-based correspondent for the Christian Science Monitor.
· Patti McCracken, whose work appears in the Wall Street Journal Europe, The Guardian, The Chicago Tribune and elsewhere.
· David Rennie, The Economist's European Union correspondent.
· Aernout Van Lynden, who has covered everything from the Soviet withdrawal from
Afghanistan to the Gulf War and the Palestinian uprising.
What will the course cover?
The course features a mixture of lectures, discussions and a practical reporting assignment.
· How to break into foreign reporting.
· How to find your feet in a foreign country when you don’t speak the language.
· When (and why) you should bypass official sources of information.
· Finding and reporting the story no one else has.
· Tips on staying safe in dangerous and unpredictable places.
· Common mistakes that even seasoned professionals make.
· And much more!
Reporting project:
An important part of the course, the reporting project simulates a real assignment – you’ll file your own story from Prague under the guidance of the course trainers.
Who should attend?
The course is designed to prepare participants for a career in international reporting. It is therefore ideal for journalism students, young journalists, and others with serious interest in the profession.
Social program
An essential part of the course, the social program allows students to meet the trainers and fellow participants whilst absorbing the local culture. Activities include two dinners, a midweek concert and end-of-week drinks.
Accommodation
You’ll be staying at the Iris hotel, which is also the location for the training sessions. It’s a modern, 4-star hotel just outside the city centre with satellite television and broadband internet in every room.
How much does it cost?
The course fee is reduced to €955 (or US$1,395) for all
applications received by October 9, 2009.
The fee for later applications is €1,075 (or US$1,595). The price includes training, accommodation, local transport, and social activities.

Established in 1999, Transitions (TOL) is a nonprofit organization that supports independent media through a variety of training courses, journalism seminars and internships. Last year, TOL trained over 300 journalists and journalism students from some 50 countries. TOL also published an internet magazine, Transitions Online.
