Canadian Living Magazine is pleased to announce the launch of The Canadian Living Journalism Prize. As Canada’s most popular women’s magazine, Canadian Living is proud to support the development of Canada’s young journalists by offering them a chance to have their feature story published nationally in Canadian Living or online at www.canadianliving.com.
In addition to publication in our magazine, first-prize winners will be awarded $1,500 and offered a 12-week internship at our editorial office in Toronto.
Canadian Living is dedicated to fully engaging its interns. They actively pitch, research and write stories for the print edition and for the web. Canadian Living is proud to have a number of former interns on staff full time, a testament to the success of our training approach.
Contest Guidelines
Currently enrolled full-time students studying journalism at an accredited Canadian university or college are invited to apply for the prize by submitting an application package, along with a story proposal for a feature-length article (1,800 to 2,000 words) for either the Health or Life section of Canadian Living Magazine.
Selected applicants will then be invited to submit their stories in full for a chance to be selected for publication and/or awarded the internship.
Application Procedure
1) Applying students will submit a 500- to 700-word story proposal. The proposal should give a clear picture of which section the piece is intended to run, the intended focus of the piece, who the writer intends to interview, how the writer intends to approach the subject, why the piece is right for Canadian Living and how it will appeal to our readers. It must complete the following sentence: “This story
will show our readers . . .”
In addition to the story proposals, applicants will include a completed application form, up to three published or unpublished samples of journalistic writing and a letter of reference from a journalism professor. Applicants must be currently enrolled students in a journalism program at a recognized Canadian college or university.
Initial application packages must be submitted no later than November 6, 2009.
2) The initial queries will be judged on suitability for Canadian Living, journalistic acumen, timeliness, originality and understanding of the reader. Consideration will also be given to the student’s submitted writing samples, and the letter of reference. Students whose queries have been selected will be notified on December 7, 2009, and invited to submit their 1,800- to 2,200-word stories in full
.
The deadline for submission of completed stories will be February 1, 2010.
3) The completed stories will be read and judged by the Canadian Living selection panel. The winners will be notified by March 15, 2010. The two winners of the internship will be invited to begin their placement at our Toronto editorial office on May 25, 2010.
