Overview
The Association
of Medical Illustrators (AMI) is seeking a freelance writer to cover its 67th
Annual Meeting, being held this year in Toronto at the Delta Chelsea Hotel in
downtown Toronto. The assignment would entail coverage of:

AMI Media
Exhibit Opening – Wed, July 25 (6:30pm -8:00pm)
-
Three
days of proceedings – July 26-28 (8:00am – 5:00pm)

Day 1
– Thur, Jul 26 – Theme: Medical & Scientific Education
o
Day 2
– Fri, Jul 27 – Theme: Scientific Visualization
o
Day 3
– Sat, Jul 28 – Theme: Medical Gaming & Simulation

Final
Awards Banquet – Saturday, July 28 (6:30pm – 9:30pm)
Not all events
and talks would need to be attended/covered, but main focus is to include:
Media Exhibit Opening; plenary sessions in the mornings; Tech Showcase Fri, Jul
27th in the afternoon; and the wrap-up Awards Banquet on Saturday
evening.
Deliverables
The AMI is
seeking to build on our brand development, and wants a story that is worthy of
publishing in such publications as Nature,
Science, Discover, Scientific American
or similar reputable biomedical/scientific and/or lay-reader publications. We
want the coverage to focus on the uniqueness of our profession and how our roles
as visual translators advance the understanding of science and medicine.
Some topics to be
included are:

highlights
of our plenary speakers

themed
approach to the conference content (three quite diverse days of programming)

overview
of the content and events of the conference
-
why the
AMI meets and what can be taken away from the conference
-
how our
conferences impact the world of not only medical illustration, but the
advancement of science and medicine, and therefore, the lives of people
-
the
unique and extensive training of medical illustrators (visualization specialists)
-
and
the diversity of our profession and the areas that our AMI members are involved
in, which includes: textbook illustration; biomedical animation; interactive
media and programming; editorial illustration; 3D physical model creation; human
prosthetics (anaplastology); medical-legal visualization; virtual simulation;
education (from lay public to specialized professionals); medical research
visualization (data portrayal, pattern recognition, etc.); pharmaceutical and
biotech marketing; etc.
A feature article is required, 3000-3500 words in length, with two
edited versions: a one-page synopsis
(600 words) and a two-page article
at 1200 words. Visuals (photos and members’ artwork) to be integrated with
writing. Copyright is to be
held by the Association of Medical Illustrators (or licensing agreement to be
arranged with AMI) that allows for article(s) to be used in different forms of
communication about our profession, both internally to the membership and
externally to stakeholders.
Compensation
The AMI is offering the following
compensation package:

$2000 payment

unlimited press pass to all events at
the conference with open access to all events

food/meals: Media Exhibit Opening,
breakfasts, lunches and Awards Banquet

access to members in attendance, as
well as speakers (as available), sponsors and organizers
