Waterloo Region Record - paid

The Waterloo Region Record, based in Kitchener, Ont., is seeking candidates for three summer internships.

These internships will run from the end of May 2012 to the end of August 2012. They are full-time - temporary positions, paid at the starting rate for reporters, as per the collective agreement.

The deadline for applications is Feb. 17, 2012.

This opportunity is open to undergraduates and recent graduates in journalism; or undergraduates and recent graduates in other programs who show strong news-writing skills in campus or community newspapers.

Two of the successful candidates will be primarily assigned from the city desk, but the work could include writing — print and online — for the business, arts/life and sports sections of the papers. We’re looking for people who can turn stories around quickly and accurately, and work responsibly with a minimum of supervision.

Over the summer, the work will include weekends and evenings. We also expect our interns to demonstrate enterprise, developing their own story ideas and pursuing them on approval by an editor.

One of the three internships at the Record will be focused largely on providing content for Grand magazine, and the newspaper’s Saturday features section, Etcetera. The successful candidate will report to the editor of those products.

Interns will be expected to make their own living arrangements in Waterloo Region. A car and valid driver’s licence are also required.
