Research Matters is looking
for Student Journalists (paid position).
Who we are:
Representing the collective
interests of Ontario’s publicly assisted universities, COU (www.cou.on.ca) advances higher education in the province through research and policy
development, communications and advocacy.
The Research Matters campaign (www.YourOntarioResearch.ca) is a collaboration among Ontario’s universities to
find new ways to tell stories about how research is changing lives.
Opportunity:
We are seeking 3-4 student
journalists to interview and write stories and profiles for our Research
Matters campaign. Work will involve speaking to university researchers from
many disciplines in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. It
will also involve reporting on people and issues that are affected by
university research.
Work will be assigned on an
as-required basis, but could involve any or all of the following:
•
Stories assigned by the Research Matters team to journalists.
•
Stories pitched by journalists to Research Matters. (There is no payment for
pitches – only for accepted stories.)
• Stories developed in
collaboration among journalists and Research Matters team to suit a particular
theme or subject area.
Remuneration: $0.50 per word
for the predetermined length of the story.
Education and Skills
• Post-secondary education in
journalism, electronic publishing or a related field.
• Ability to write, edit and
proofread effectively.
• Able to synthesize complex
research topics into interesting and engaging articles.
• Excellent communication
skills.
• Very organized, with
exceptional time-management skills.
• Previous experience covering
in science journalism and/or higher education is an asset.
