Job Title: Research Assistants
We are a Toronto based research firm currently investigating the processes and practices of news reporting and journalism. Specifically, we’re interested in the step-by-step approach of extracting information from the scene of an event and event-specific questions. The process may include interviews of individuals present.
This is an exciting opportunity for upper-year students as it allows them to apply knowledge acquired through the journalism programme and offers an interesting variety of challenges.
Duties:
• Develop: a template that allows for an event to be investigated. The template will contain questions that may be applicable to a wide range of scenarios.
• Submit: completed forms for each event that describe the investigative process of events. In other words, replies to all the questions within the template that are applicable to each specific event.
• Participate: in discussions regarding the content submitted by the team and apply feedback.
Compensation:
Candidates will be compensated based on volume and quality of work (ie. of completed forms based on the question template). The minimum amount of work and quality standards will be stated. As such, compensation is not on an hourly basis.
Skills and Experience:
• Candidates should have experience in, or taken courses, relating to newscasting through various media- print, radio, television, and web (including social media). It is preferred that candidates be in at least their third year of study in the Journalism Programme.
• Candidates should be comfortable 'covering' a story occurring in real-time and be familiar with the procedures and technical details necessary for producing a comprehensive investigation.
• Candidates should be comfortable covering a variety of types of events and news stories, including current and world events, music/arts/entertainment, and sports.
• Additional knowledge or experience writing for online sources, including but not limited to blogs, forums and/or other published websites is also an asset, but not necessary.
• A successful candidate must demonstrate logical and critical thinking skills.
