Communication Assistant

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated journalism student who wants to gain experience in the communication field. The Communications assistant will work with a small team led by the Co-director, coordinating a newsletter publication and other institutional publications.

FCJ Refugee Centre strives to meet the diverse needs of uprooted people in communities across Ontario. FCJ Refugee Centre attempts to address the problems of poverty and lack of resources, isolation, and discrimination through community-based programs which promote self-help, personal growth, community economic development and social justice.
The FCJ Refugee Centre has a mandate to:
-Provide shelter and basic life necessities such as food, clothing and transportation for women and children.
-Organize and provide Educative trainings/workshops for professionals working within the settlement and integration sector
-Provide counselling and support services, including translation interpretation services, referrals to legal assistance, employment training, programs on Canadian culture and life, and other educational workshops.
-Assist refugees and other uprooted people to adjust to Canadian society.
Key Responsibilities:
-Coordinate a news letter publication.
-Designs and produces a variety of promotional and informational print material for the Agency.
-Prepare both communications and public affairs materials (media releases, web materials, brochures and annual reports to government submissions and presentations)
-Provides audio/visual presentation support.
-Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education:
-experience in an intermediate/senior level communications role addressing public affairs issues
-Strong organizational, time management, and planning skills and the ability to multi-task.
-Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.
-Effective cross-cultural communication skills.
-Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated skills in working with new immigrants from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
-Strong writing, communication and organizational skills are essential.
-A general understanding of media operations.
ASSETS
-Proficiency in a second language
