Summer 2015 internships
The Edmonton Journal is seeking applications for its summer 2015 internship program. These paid internships run from mid-May to early September.
We are looking for enthusiastic and hard-working senior-level students or recent graduates with a strong interest in working at a daily news organization. We will be hiring three interns to work as general assignment reporters, and one to work as a producer with our digital teams.
Interns at the Journal must be able to take direction, initiate compelling story ideas, and work as part of a dynamic newsroom team. The ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure is essential as interns are expected to tackle the same kind of tasks and assignments that a staff journalist would handle. Previous experience at a daily news organization is strongly preferred. Interns need to be flexible to work evenings, weekends and overtime.
Reporters (3): The successful candidates must be comfortable filing breaking news and writing on tight deadlines for multiple platforms. Interns should have strong reporting and writing skills, be comfortable leveraging social media to engage audiences, and be able to shoot and edit multimedia projects. Experience with data journalism is an asset. Interns are assigned to the news section, but there are opportunities to work in other departments, such as sports, business, and arts and life. If you wish to be considered for this, please state your preferences in your cover letter, and ensure you provide us with appropriate clippings. Driver’s licence required.
Web/mobile producer (1): The successful candidate will work with our web and mobile teams, writing, editing, posting and curating content for our website and mobile app. He or she must have experience in multimedia journalism in a busy news environment, understand how to target content to mobile and web readers, and be able write and edit quickly and cleanly. He or she must have a strong knowledge of social media, and be familiar with WordPress and other content management systems, blogging tools, web analytics and apps. Experience with audio/video editing is essential.
Applicants should send a cover letter, resume and up to five examples of their work to:
