Web Producer Position Contract
Canadian Running magazine (Gripped Publishing Inc.)

Purpose of the role

The Web Producer is responsible for creating content for Canadian Running’s website (runningmagazine.ca) and unique content for social media such as Facebook and Twitter. This is a half-time, 20-hour-a-week position.

The nature of online content

Online content can take many forms, including plain text, links, still images (illustrations, photographs, diagrams), animation, audio, video, interactive devices (forms, social media, forums, polls, etc.). The main responsibility of the Web Producer will be to write and gather stories (primarily text-based but also possibly audio and video). There will be at least one original story per day. A close relationship with other media specialists, such as our editors, and video and SEO specialists will be required.

Duties

Schedule the creation/acquisition of content in accordance with editorial policy. Manage the creation/acquisition of content in accordance with the schedule. Prepare written content for websites (including feature articles, advertising copy, database content, links, FAQs, etc.).  Locate and select appropriate multimedia content, including still images, animations, music and video. Edit copy in accordance with Canadian Running and CP style guides. The Web Producer can work from home but will come into the office once a week (if possible), for a half day, to meet with editorial staff.

Volume of work

Five Days a week, (Friday to Tuesday) the following content will be posted. Posting more stories one day and fewer the next will not work, since the goal is consistent updates.
—Three stories focussing on the Canadian running scene for a total of no less than 900 words (about 300 to 400 words each) every day. Two of these stories will likely be rewritten based on information from wire and other web sources. At least one story will be based on original research and gathering. Each story should aim to include photos, videos and links when applicable. If audio or video content is produced directly, it needs to be planned in advance with the editor. All stories will be linked to Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus, and those with images will also go on Pinterest.

—Stories may include one interview a day.
—The stories will be a mix of racing, recreational, fitness, science and health-related running articles.
The Web Producer may also be asked to edit and format blogs or other content commissioned by the editor.

Reporting relationships

The Web Producer will work within the team of the Gripped Publishing website owners, reporting directly to the editor of Canadian Running. At the beginning of each day, anticipated stories for the day will be discussed with the editor. Occasionally, the editorial director and the publisher will make request directly to the Web Producer. In some circumstances, the website owners may outsource or produce additional content .
Other content management responsibilities

Responding to requests from those involved in strategic management of editorial policy, answering queries about content, responding to website and social media-based queries and discussions about content, removing unsuitable comments.

Website promotion

 Work with our SEO manager to maximise incoming links.

Content maintenance

 Update and maintain time-sensitive material. Maintain menus, indexes and directories within the site.

Renumeration

$ 400 week. This is a contract position running From June 1 to October 1 2012. 

Qualifications

Degree or diploma in Journalism, experience in new media and a strong knowledge of running (ranging from beginner’s issues to Canada’s Olympians).
