Nikkei Research and Education Project of Ontario “Nikkei Voice”
June 2014 to August 2014
Nikkei Voice serves as a vital forum between Japanese Canadian communities through a journalistic medium. We seek an energetic Summer Research Student to work at the newspaper as a writer, online producer, and researcher. Duties will include:
• Conduct relevant research as a basis for articles that will broaden the knowledge and understanding of Japanese Canadian history, culture, and community.
• Collaborate with Nikkei Voice staff to produce content for the print and online versions of the paper including conducting interviews with members of the Japanese Canadian community and beyond.
• Contribute to the continued efforts of the paper to reach out to Canada’s Japanese communities and help in the expansion of Nikkei Voice’s efforts to reach out to international Nikkei communities.
• Collaborate with the Managing Editor to learn newspaper layout, online publishing, video and audio recording, and the implementation of various printbased initiatives including advertising proposals and organizing fundraising events. Work with the Business Manager to learn the fundamentals of running a small business and a small community newspaper in Canada.
• Assist with special events and fundraisers.
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
• Enrolled as a student in a post-secondary institution
• Ability to work collaboratively with a team
• Flexible, adaptable, and able to respond to changing priorities
• Candidate must state their commitment ahead of time
• Must enjoy writing and going on various assignments
